Spread the love

Valentine’s Day is not too far off. Here’s a fun craft that your kids will love, not only because it’s fun, but also yummy. The secret (and simple) ingredient in making a bugs and kisses Valentine’s Day card is paper towels. Yeah, plain old paper towels.  You’ll need construction paper, scissors, a glue stick, tape, a red and black marker, chocolate kisses, and the paper towels.

You start by taking a couple sheets of paper towels (if you want to make two) and fold them over. Then, you’re going to cut out the heart in the paper towel. I always start by going directly across, cutting out a triangle from one end to the other.

I then cut another little triangle off the tip, then just go around and make the curved part of the heart. I use paper towels because they have texture and they look a little bit like a doily. Unfold the cut paper towel and you’ve got a couple of hearts.

Cut out the inside to make the open part of the heart. It’s the same thing, just go around following the shape of the heart inside. Here we have the middle part. This is what we actually draw the bugs on.

We then cut out the heart on construction paper for the base. I want to make sure it’s slightly bigger than the paper towel heart so I put the paper heart on the construction paper while I cut around it. Give about a 1/2 an inch around to make a nice border. You could use any color you like.

Making the ladybugs is easy. Just color a red oval, then you’re going to put a couple dots on the back, make a head, four legs, and two antennae. You can do 3, 4, or 5 dots, whatever you can fit. You just go all the way around the heart making the bugs.

Once you’ve got the bugs drawn on, then you just want to glue the paper towel onto the construction paper. I just make a heart shape with the glue stick. I find it’s better to actually glue the construction paper because the paper towel is a little flimsy and it might rip.

Then you can write a little note. I put bugs and kisses. You can have the kids write Happy Valentine’s Day. Just tape the chocolate kisses. I loop the tape around and tape them onto the middle part of the heart. In one example, I only put 3, another I put 6.

It’s however many you want to put in the middle  (and how much the kids like the person that they’re giving it the card to ;).
