When the weather is too cold, too snowy (or too rainy) for the kids to play outdoors, just brew up some hot chocolate and host a neighborhood play day. This is a fun idea to keep everyone busy and active during the winter months.
A fun idea for the kids (and parents, too) is to work together to create a mural! It’s not only fun but educational too.
Start with a roll of finger paint paper or butcher paper, which you can roll out on the kitchen floor for the kids to work on. Gather the kids and start working on themes. Write them on slips of paper and have the group vote for the best one.
Fun themes include an undersea scene, a garden full of flowers, birds, bees and trees, and outer space.
Creative materials can include crayons, markers, and finger paint. For added dimension, try Wikki Stix, wax covered yarn—safe for all surfaces. Wikki Stix adhere to the paper with just fingertip pressure, and can be peeled up and changed easily. They cut with scissors, so small pieces can be added for flower centers, or scales on a fish, or antennae on a space alien!
The possibilities are endless.
Birds and flowers can be made by folding construction paper into a kind of simple origami approach, and then taping them to the mural.
When the mural is complete, tape it to the wall. Take some photos you can email or post on Facebook for each contributing artist.
